Why is your lumbar disc protruding than others? "I am not protruding in any way, except for my lumbar disc!" These two phrases we often say illustrate the current high incidence of lumbar disc herniation. However, do you really think lumbar disc herniation is daily discomfort that will be fine as long as you can tolerate it? Not really! Recently, a patient with severe lumbar disc herniation visited Jiaxing Kaiyi Hospital. On admission, he was no longer able to walk long distances and developed claudication...
Patient Condition
Mr. Li is 57-year-old but has always been in good health. About half a year ago, he developed a persistent pain in his waist and back of his left thigh while carrying heavy objects. At first, he thought "the pain would disappear as long as he endured it for a while". Unexpectedly, his symptoms did not relieve but aggravated after a rest. In addition, he could not even walk more than 100 meters with intermittent claudication. This condition made Li and his family panic. After several visited doctors without significant improvement, Li came to Jiaxing Kaiyi Hospital for treatment.
Li was admitted to the hospital and received relevant examinations. Zhenyun Zhang, Associate Chief Physician of Orthopedics, confirmed that Li suffered from relatively severe "lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar disc herniation". "In general, patients with early lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar disc herniation are mainly treated conservatively, supplemented by drug therapy, physical therapy and other methods. But this patient had such a severe condition that affected the stability of his spine and quality of life, and was almost unable to move. Therefore, we recommended surgery for better results. " Dr. Zhang said.
After a complete preoperative evaluation, Dr. Zhang and his team performed "posterior lumbar fusion" for Li. In the 2.5- hour operation, the physicians successfully performed a number of complex operations for lumbar spinal stenosis, including posterior decompressive laminectomy, nerve root exploration, nucleus pulposus removal, intervertebral CAGE implantation and pedicle screw instrumentation, which helped Li "straighten his back". With the meticulous care of the medical team, Li recovered well after surgery and has been discharged.
After surgery, Dr. Zhang explained that lumbar disc herniation is a syndrome caused by disc degeneration, internal annular disruption, herniated nucleus pulposus compression or nerve roots or cauda equina stimulation, which is a common cause of lower back and leg pain. It occurs in a variety of people, including workers who are engaged in heavy physical work with a large lumbar burden for a long time, as well as white-collar workers and programmers who lack low back muscle without exercises because of long-term sedentary lifestyles. Most patients need only conservative treatment, while only a few patients in severe conditions need surgeries.
Physician Interpretation
After surgery, Dr. Zhang explained that lumbar disc herniation is a syndrome caused by disc degeneration, internal annular disruption, herniated nucleus pulposus compression or nerve roots or cauda equina stimulation, which is a common cause of low back and leg pain.
In fact, the vast majority of patients with lumbar disc herniation, as long as they take early active lower back exercise and receive rehabilitation therapy and drug therapy with the guidance of professional practitioners, can prevent the deterioration of their conditions. Now Jiaxing Kaiyi Hospital performs routine diagnosis & treatment, surgery and rehabilitation therapy for orthopedics diseases, providing the majority of orthopedic patients with high-quality medical services.
Finally, we would like to remind you to seek medical advice as soon as possible if you have any persistent symptoms of lower back pain, radiating leg pain and decreased mobility of your toes or ankles. Early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment are the most important things.
